Day 1 — Kigali to Bigogwe via Rulindo, Gakenke, and Musanze
Early Morning — The Drive North and West
Leave Kigali by 6:30 AM. The route heads north through Rulindo, then Gakenke, before swinging west through Musanze — Rwanda's gateway to the Virunga volcanoes — and finally south into Nyabihu District toward Bigogwe. This is a longer, more scenic route than heading straight west, taking you through terraced hillsides, small trading towns, and eventually the dramatic volcanic backdrop around Musanze before the landscape softens into Bigogwe's rolling pastures. Expect the full drive to take around 3.5–4 hours depending on stops and road conditions.
Mid-Morning — Arrival and Meeting Your Guide
you’ll arrive at the Ibere rya Bigogwe office, marked by the arch at the Rubavu–Nyabihu border. After a welcome briefing, you're dressed in a shuka or rumbiya — traditional cattle-keeper attire — and given an inkoni, the herding stick every cowherd carries. From here, it's a short trip by moto (or car) into the farms themselves.
Late Morning — Among the Green Hills
walking into the farmland, the scenery is striking — layered green hills with cattle grazing across them in every direction. Your guide shares the cultural history of Bigogwe, where cows are treated as family, symbols of pride and identity rather than just livestock. You'll join the local cowboys as they herd cattle down to the river for their twice-daily drink, using your inkoni and picking up their traditional whistles and songs along the way.
Midday — milking and a Hillside Lunch
Back at the farm, you get a hands-on lesson in traditional hand-milking using wooden ibyansi or bamboo ingare containers. After trying it yourself, you're rewarded with the "Bigogwe Cappuccino" — milk fresh and warm straight from the cow. Lunch follows al fresco on the hillside: sweet potatoes, beans, cassava, and more fresh milk.
Afternoon — Games, Songs, and Stories
The afternoon eases into the rhythms of pastoral life — traditional games the cowboys play while watching over their herds, along with songs and storytelling passed down through generations.
Evening — Camping on Bigogwe Hill
as the light fades, you pitch camp directly on the farmland. Dinner is a traditional shared meal, and once night falls fully, the stargazing here is exceptional — no city lights for miles.

Day 2 — Hiking Ibere rya Bigogwe Rock and the Return via Musanze, Gakenke, and Rulindo
Early Morning — waking in the Highlands
Sunrise is cool and misty. Breakfast is traditional, paired again with fresh milk.
Morning — Second Milking Round and Ghee-Making
A second milking session for those who want more practice, followed by a demonstration of traditional ghee-making — watching or helping as fresh milk becomes clarified butter the traditional way.
Mid-Morning — The Climb to Ibere rya Bigogwe Rock
a guided hike up the landmark rock formation that gives the area its name. Along the way, your guide points out local plants and their traditional uses. The climb is moderate, and the summit rewards you with sweeping views over the surrounding farmland and hills.
Midday — Farewell
Back at the farm, you break camp and share a final traditional meal with the community before saying goodbye to your hosts.
Afternoon — the Journey Back
Depart Bigogwe by early afternoon, retracing the route back through Musanze, Gakenke, and Rulindo to Kigali. Arrive back in the capital by early-to-mid evening.
