About This Package
Early Morning — the Drive North and West
Leave Kigali by 6:00 AM to make the most of the day. The route heads north through Rulindo, then Gakenke, before swinging west through Musanze and south into Nyabihu District toward Bigogwe. It's a scenic but longer drive — terraced hillsides, small trading towns, and the volcanic backdrop around Musanze before the land softens into Bigogwe's rolling pastures. Expect around 3.5–4 hours on the road, so an early start is essential to leave enough daylight for the activities.
Mid-Morning — Arrival and Meeting Your Guide
Arrive at the Ibere rya Bigogwe office, marked by the arch at the Rubavu–Nyabihu border, by around 9:30–10:00 AM. After a short briefing, you're dressed in a shuka or rumbiya — traditional cattle-keeper attire — and given an inkoni, the herding stick every cowherd carries. A short trip by moto or car takes you into the farms themselves.
Late Morning — Among the Green Hills
Walking into the farmland, the scenery opens up — layered green hills with cattle grazing in every direction. Your guide shares the history and culture of Bigogwe, where cows are treated as family and symbols of pride rather than just livestock. You'll join the local cowboys herding cattle down to the river for their daily drink, using your inkoni and picking up their traditional whistles and songs along the way.
Midday — Milking and a Hillside Lunch
Get a hands-on lesson in traditional hand-milking using wooden ibyansi or bamboo ingare containers. Try it yourself, then taste the "Bigogwe Cappuccino" — milk fresh and warm straight from the cow. Lunch follows al fresco on the hillside: sweet potatoes, beans, cassava, and more fresh milk.
Early Afternoon — Games and Traditional Culture
Join the cowboys in traditional games played while watching over grazing herds, along with songs and storytelling passed down through generations — a compact but full taste of Bigogwe's pastoral life.
Afternoon — Optional Rock Hike
If time allows, a shorter guided walk toward Ibere rya Bigogwe Rock gives you views over the farmland without the full ascent, plus a chance to hear about local plants and their traditional uses. This is optional depending on how much daylight you have left for the return drive.
Late Afternoon — the Journey Back
Depart Bigogwe by around 3:00–3:30 PM at the latest, retracing the route through Musanze, Gakenke, and Rulindo back to Kigali. Arrive back in the capital by early evening, around 7:00 PM.
