About This Package
Day 1 — Pickup and Transfer to Rubavu
Morning — Pickup in Kigali
Your guide picks you up from your Kigali hotel in the morning, typically around 8:00–9:00 AM. After a short briefing on the days ahead — what to pack, pacing, and what to expect from the trail — you set off northwest toward Lake Kivu.
Midday — The Drive to Rubavu
The drive takes roughly 4.5 hours, descending through green hills toward the lake. Depending on timing, this can include a brief stop in Kigali itself (genocide memorial, local market) or run straight through, arriving in Rubavu by early afternoon.
Afternoon — Settling In
Check into your hotel in Rubavu (Gisenyi) and use the rest of the day to rest and acclimatize. A walk along Gisenyi's lakeside promenade in the late afternoon is a good way to get your first proper look at Lake Kivu — Rwanda's largest lake, sitting at over 1,460 meters above sea level, ringed by hills on all sides.
Evening — Final Preparations
Dinner at your hotel, with a final gear check and a clearer briefing on tomorrow's first trail stage. Rest early — the real walking starts in the morning.
Day 2 — Rubavu to Cyimbiri: Onto the Trail
Morning — Trailhead Briefing
Meet your guide at Bralirwa, Rwanda's oldest brewery and the official starting point of the Congo Nile Trail. A short orientation covers the terrain ahead before you set off on foot.
Midday to Evening — The First Stage
This is a full day of hiking, roughly 7 hours, through a landscape shaped by generations of farming — coffee, cassava, beans, and banana plantations layered across rolling hills. Lake Kivu reappears constantly below as the trail climbs and descends, giving you your first real sense of the trail's rhythm: steady effort, constant reward.
Overnight in Cyimbiri
Arrive at Cyimbiri village in the early evening and settle into a simple budget guesthouse, tired but immersed in the pace of rural life along the lake.
Day 3 — Cyimbiri to Kinunu: Coffee and Lakeshore Life
Morning — Second Trail Stage
After breakfast, set out on a roughly 5-hour hike to Kinunu. The terrain eases slightly compared to Day 2, giving you more space to take in the surroundings — dense coffee and banana plantations, and some of the best birdwatching stretches on the trail.
Afternoon — Coffee Washing Station and Village Life
Stop at a local coffee washing station to see how Rwandan coffee cherries are processed before drying, a hands-on look at an industry that shapes much of this region's economy. Continue into Kinunu's lakeside villages, where you can talk with local fishing and farming families going about their day.
Overnight in Kinunu
Settle into a lakeside guesthouse as the sun sets over the water — one of the trail's most peaceful stops.
Day 4 — Kinunu to Karongi, and Islands on Lake Kivu
Morning — Final Hiking Stage
Set out after breakfast for the last trekking leg, continuing through rolling hills and terraced farmland toward Karongi (Kibuye). By now the walking feels familiar, more about soaking in the cumulative scenery than pushing through new ground.
Afternoon — Boat Trip to the Islands
Arrive in Karongi around midday and swap hiking boots for a boat seat. Visit Napoleon Island, shaped like Napoleon's hat and home to a large bat colony reachable by a short climb, then Monkey Island, where vervet monkeys move freely through the trees, and finally the quieter Peace Island for a slower, reflective stop by the water.
Overnight in Karongi
Check into a hotel in Karongi town — a comfortable step up after two nights in trailside guesthouses.
Day 5 — Mount Karongi, Sorghum Beer, and the Environmental Museum
Morning — Up Mount Karongi
A 4×4 takes you up a rough but scenic road to the summit of Mount Karongi, one of the region's highest peaks, about an hour from town. The views from the top rank among the best of the trip — Lake Kivu spread out below, framed by every hill you've walked through over the past three days.
Mid-Morning — Sorghum Beer Experience
Near the summit, meet the Dushyigikirane sorghum farmers for a full walkthrough of traditional sorghum beer-making, from harvest to the finished brew, shared the traditional way from a communal calabash — an unhurried, genuine cultural exchange.
Midday — Environmental Museum
Back in Karongi, visit Africa's only Environmental Museum, with exhibits on Lake Kivu's ecosystem and the conservation challenges facing the region.
Afternoon — Rest and Reflection
The afternoon is left open — relax by the lake, wander Karongi town, or simply rest ahead of the return journey. This is your last night on the trail, so it's worth spending it slowly.
Overnight in Karongi
Day 6 — Drop-off: Karongi to Kigali
Morning — Final Breakfast
A relaxed final breakfast in Karongi, with time to pack and reflect on the past five days before heading back.
Midday — The Drive Back to Kigali
Depart Karongi around midday for the roughly 3-hour drive back to Kigali, retracing the route along Lake Kivu's shore in the opposite direction.
Afternoon — Drop-off in Kigali
Arrive back in Kigali by mid-to-late afternoon, where your guide drops you at your hotel or another agreed location — closing out a six-day journey that took you from lakeside brewery to mountaintop sorghum farm and back.
Practical notes:
Distance and pace: Covers the Rubavu–Karongi section (~60km) of the 227km full trail, spread over three moderate hiking days (Days 2–4) with lighter cultural and rest days bookending the trek.
Fitness level: Moderate to challenging on hiking days — rolling and sometimes steep terrain; vehicle support is typically available if needed.
Accommodation: Hotel in Rubavu (Night 1), budget guesthouses in Cyimbiri and Kinunu (Nights 2–3), hotel in Karongi (Nights 4–5).
Best season: June–September (dry season) for firmer trail conditions; some river crossings become difficult during rains.
Alternative: The trekking days can be swapped for mountain biking for those who prefer cycling to walking.

6-Day Congo Nile Trail by 4x4: Kigali Pickup to Kigali Drop-off
Day 1 — Pickup and Transfer to Rubavu
Morning — Pickup in Kigali
Your guide picks you up from your Kigali hotel around 8:00–9:00 AM. After a briefing on the days ahead, you set off northwest toward Lake Kivu.
Midday — The Drive to Rubavu
The drive takes roughly 3 hours through Rwanda's green highlands, descending toward the lake. Arrive in Rubavu (Gisenyi) by early afternoon.
Afternoon — Settling In
Check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day acclimatizing. A walk along Gisenyi's lakeside promenade gives you your first proper look at Lake Kivu, and a chance to watch local fishing boats being prepared for the evening.
Evening — Introduction to Night Fishing
Tonight is your first taste of one of Lake Kivu's most iconic traditions: night fishing. Local fishermen head out after dark in small wooden boats lashed together in threes, using lanterns to attract sambaza (small sardine-like fish) to the surface. From the shore — or by joining a boat if arranged — you watch the lake come alive with scattered points of light drifting across the dark water, accompanied by the rhythmic singing fishermen use to keep pace and morale on the water. It's quiet, atmospheric, and one of the most memorable non-driving experiences of the trip.
Day 2 — Rubavu to Rutsiro by 4x4: Coffee Country
Morning — Onto the Trail Road
After breakfast, set off in your 4x4 safari jeep following the Congo Nile Trail road south along the lake's edge. This first stretch of driving winds through steep, terraced hillsides — the trail's northern section is the most rugged, and the jeep lets you cover the distance while still stopping wherever the views or villages call for it.
Midday — Coffee Experience
Stop at a coffee-growing community along the route for a full hands-on coffee experience: walking through the plantation to see how coffee cherries are grown and picked, visiting a washing station to watch the pulping and fermentation process, and finishing with a fresh cup brewed the traditional way. This region produces some of Rwanda's best-known coffee, and the visit gives real insight into the work behind every cup.
Afternoon — Villages and Viewpoints
Continue by jeep through small lakeside and hillside villages, stopping at scenic viewpoints over Lake Kivu's northern bays. The jeep lets you reach lookout points on rougher tracks that would otherwise be inaccessible.
Evening — Overnight in Rutsiro
Settle into a lakeside guesthouse or hotel in the Rutsiro area, with dinner overlooking the water.
Day 3 — Rutsiro to Karongi by 4x4: Islands and Lakeshore
Morning — Continuing South
Depart after breakfast, following the trail road further south toward Karongi (Kibuye). The terrain softens somewhat here, with the jeep giving you easy access to villages, farms, and viewpoints along the way without the physical demands of hiking the same stretch.
Midday — Arrival in Karongi and Boat Trip
Arrive in Karongi around midday and swap the jeep for a boat to explore Lake Kivu's islands. Visit Napoleon Island, shaped like Napoleon's hat and home to a bat colony reachable by a short climb, Monkey Island, where vervet monkeys move freely through the trees, and the quieter Peace Island for a relaxed stop by the water.
Afternoon — Karongi Town
Back on land, take some time in Karongi itself — visit the Environmental Museum, Africa's only museum dedicated to environmental themes, with exhibits on Lake Kivu's ecosystem.
Evening — Overnight in Karongi
Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Karongi, with the option of a second night fishing viewing from the lakeshore if the timing and weather cooperate.
Day 4 — Karongi to Nyamasheke by 4x4: Tea Hills and Deep Countryside
Morning — Into Nyamasheke District
Continue south by jeep into Nyamasheke District, where the landscape shifts again — tea plantations begin to dominate the hillsides alongside coffee, and the trail road winds through some of the most remote and scenic countryside on the route.
Midday — Tea and Village Stops
Stop at a tea plantation to see the picking and processing side by side with the coffee experience from Day 2 — a useful contrast between Rwanda's two major cash crops. Continue with stops in small trading villages along the way, where the jeep lets you pull off easily to interact with locals, buy fresh produce, or simply take in the view.
Afternoon — Lakeshore Driving
The road hugs the lake more closely here, with long stretches of open water views interrupted by fishing hamlets and small bays.
Evening — Overnight in Nyamasheke
Settle into a guesthouse or lodge in the Nyamasheke area for the night, with dinner featuring fresh lake fish.
Day 5 — Nyamasheke to Rusizi by 4x4: The Final Stretch
Morning — Last Leg South
Depart after breakfast for the final drive south to Rusizi (Cyangugu), the southern end of the Congo Nile Trail where Lake Kivu narrows toward the Rusizi River. This stretch benefited most from Rwanda's new tarmac road along the southern lakeshore, making for smoother, more scenic driving than the rugged northern sections.
Midday — Arrival in Rusizi
Arrive in Rusizi around midday. Explore the town, sitting at the meeting point of Lake Kivu and the Rusizi River, with views across into DR Congo just across the water.
Afternoon — Final Night Fishing Experience
Spend the afternoon relaxing lakeside, then head out in the evening for a final night fishing experience — this time from the southern end of the lake, a fitting bookend to the one you saw in Rubavu on Day 1.
Evening — Overnight in Rusizi
Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Rusizi, marking the completion of the full Congo Nile Trail route by road.
Day 6 — Drop-off: Rusizi to Kigali
Morning — Final Breakfast
A relaxed breakfast in Rusizi, with time to pack and reflect on the trip.
Midday — The Drive Back to Kigali
Depart Rusizi for the drive back to Kigali — a longer return leg (around 4–5 hours) since you're now starting from the far southern end of the lake, likely routing back via Huye/Butare or Karongi depending on road conditions.
Afternoon — Drop-off in Kigali
Arrive back in Kigali by late afternoon/early evening, where your guide drops you at your hotel or another agreed location.
Practical notes:
Route covered: Full Congo Nile Trail by road, Rubavu to Rusizi (~227km), done comfortably by 4x4 over 4 driving days (Days 2–5) instead of the 8–10 days it takes on foot.
4x4 advantage: Lets you reach rougher viewpoints and village tracks inaccessible to hikers on a tight schedule, while covering the full length of the lake rather than just the northern section.
Night fishing: Best experienced on clear, calm nights; timing depends on local fishermen's schedules, so your guide will confirm the best evening at each stop.
Coffee experience: Typically includes plantation walk, washing station visit, and a tasting — some operators also offer a hands-on roasting demonstration.
Accommodation: Hotel in Rubavu (Night 1), guesthouses/lodges in Rutsiro, Karongi, Nyamasheke, and a hotel in Rusizi (Nights 2–5).
Best season: June–September (dry season) for the smoothest driving conditions, especially on the still-unpaved northern sections
