The Ultimate 7-Day Rwanda Safari Itinerary

Seven days is enough time to see the best of Rwanda — gorillas in the Virungas, wildlife on the plains of Akagera, rainforest in Nyungwe and the shores of Lake Kivu. Here is a sample itinerary.

The Ultimate 7-Day Rwanda Safari Itinerary

Rwanda is small, well connected and remarkably easy to travel. In seven days you can cover the country's headline experiences without feeling rushed: gorilla trekking, a classic game drive, a rainforest canopy walk and a lakeside retreat.

Day one begins in Kigali. Arrive, settle in and, if energy allows, take a short guided city tour that covers the craft markets, hilltop viewpoints and a memorable introduction to Rwandan cuisine. Overnight in Kigali.

On day two, travel north to Volcanoes National Park. The drive through Rwanda's terraced green hills is a highlight in itself. Your afternoon is free to explore the surrounding villages, visit the historic sites in the area or simply rest ahead of your trek. Days three and four continue with your unforgettable encounter with the mountain gorillas.

From the volcanoes, travel south to Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa's oldest rainforests. Spend time on the canopy walk, spot monkeys and chimpanzees, and take an easy forest trail under the guidance of an experienced ranger.

Next, head towards the shores of Lake Kivu, where the pace slows. Enjoy a boat trip to the nearby islands and beaches, cycle a stretch of the Congo Nile Trail, or simply watch the sun set over the water from a lakeside terrace.

Finish with a relaxed drive back to Kigali or, if time allows, an optional day in Akagera National Park chasing the Big Five on a boat and game drive. Whatever you choose, your Global Line Safaris team will tailor the pace, accommodation and activities to your interests and travel style.
