Lake Kivu stretches across the west of Rwanda, its deep blue waters framed by terraced hills and, on the far shore, the high peaks of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is Rwanda's natural weekend retreat and a favourite way to end a safari.
The lake's resort towns each have a different character. Gisenyi in the north is lively and lakefront, with easy access to the volcanic region. Kibuye in the heart of the lake is quieter and arguably the most beautiful, with dramatic peninsulas, islands and sunsets. Karongi and Rubavu offer a range of lakeside lodges to suit every budget.
A boat trip is essential. Small wooden boats and organised excursions take you to the islands and beaches, including visits to fishermen's communities and, from Kibuye, Napoleon Island with its colony of fruit bats. Swimming is a pleasure in the deep, clear water.
For active travellers, the Congo Nile Trail runs along the lakeshore between Gisenyi and Kibuye. The route can be walked over several days or cycled in one or two, passing coffee and banana fields, village markets and breathtaking viewpoints over the water. It is one of the most scenic multi-day routes in East Africa.
A weekend on the lake is the perfect counterpoint to gorilla trekking or a wildlife safari. Global Line Safaris can build Lake Kivu into any itinerary, arranging boat trips, guides from the Congo Nile Trail, and welcoming lodges with the best views.
